Spotting Quality Vintage

Not all vintage is created equal. Knowing what to look for can be the difference between a gem and a dud. Here's our guide to spotting quality vintage clothing.

Check the Labels

Vintage labels are a goldmine of information. Look for country of origin (pieces made in the USA, UK, or Europe tend to be older and higher quality), union labels (common in American workwear from the 40s–80s), and single stitch vs double stitch on t-shirts (single stitch = pre-1990s, generally higher quality).

Feel the Fabric

Quality vintage is almost always made from natural fibres — cotton, wool, silk, or linen. These age well and feel substantial. Good vintage has weight and structure to it. Be cautious of overly thin, scratchy, or pilling synthetic fabrics.

Inspect the Stitching

Turn the garment inside out and check the seams. Tight, even stitching with flat seams is a sign of quality construction. Loose threads, uneven seams, or fraying are warning signs.

Look at the Hardware

Zips, buttons, and buckles reveal a lot. Metal hardware on denim and outerwear is a strong indicator of quality and era. Look for branded zippers like YKK or Talon — a good sign of authenticity and age.

Check for Fading Consistency

Natural, even fading is part of vintage charm. Be cautious of patchy, irregular fading that might indicate damage or staining rather than age. On denim, look for natural whiskering and fading patterns.

Smell It

A musty smell is normal and can usually be aired out. A strong chemical smell (mothballs, mildew, or smoke) is harder to remove and worth factoring in.

Check the Fit Potential

Great vintage has structure. Check the shoulders, collar, and waistband. A well-cut vintage piece will hold its shape. Stretched necklines, warped collars, or misshapen shoulders are harder to fix.
